Even as TV viewing options continue to evolve, over-the-air (OTA) TV antennas have remained a steadfast choice for consumers, providing cost-effective and dependable entertainment. At Mohu, our trend-setting line of indoor TV antennas is the industry gold standard for low-profile antennas, and we work continuously to improve the products that consumers welcome into their homes.

This year, we identified the need to modernize our family of TV antennas and decided it was time to bring a fresh look to our signature products.

INTRODUCING our new Grey Collection — our most popular indoor TV antennas have been mindfully reimagined with a contemporary aesthetic in a warm grey color that complements all environments. They are the same antennas you know and love from Mohu, just retouched with modern updates to match your home’s interior – it’s everything you want in an antenna!

In addition to the aesthetic updates, we also made technical enhancements to our TV antennas, most notably by incorporating an attached coaxial cable. While detachable cables certainly have their merits, they can occasionally cause signal interruptions, become loose over time, or create opportunities for weak connections. By integrating the coaxial cable directly into the antenna we’ve eliminated one installation step for you, while feeding a more efficient signal connection to your TV.

Our new Grey Collection is available for purchase on our website TODAY! More details on each product are featured below.

Mohu Leaf: The Original Ultra-Thin indoor TV antenna with an upgraded style that is both appealing and blends in. 40-mile range.

Mohu Leaf Amplified: Our signature model is now paired with our Jolt Switch in-line USB amplifier for 60-mile range and signal boost you control in real time.

Mohu Gateway: An elegant addition to your TV setup with smooth, contoured features and an adaptable stand for tabletop or wall mount. 40-mile range.

Mohu Gateway Plus: Sleek, contoured design keeps a low profile with FirstStage amplification and LED signal indicator lights built in for the most efficient signal amplification and reception. 60-mile range.

Mohu Curve Amplified: Sometimes you need a boost, sometimes you don’t – get the best of both worlds with the Jolt Switch all-in-one solution as the perfect complement to the perfect indoor antenna. 60-mile range.

“Are TV antennas legal?” This is a question we hear on a daily basis, especially on TikTok, which tends to be a younger audience who might not have the same experience with TV antennas as other generations. We have lost count of the number of videos we have had reported and taken down by people who are claiming we are selling an illegal product or promoting an illegal activity, they claim watching broadcast TV with an antenna is “stealing”. FALSE! Broadcast TV is and has always been free with a TV antenna! (Also, here is a shameless plug if you’re not already following us on TikTok to give us a follow, we just hit 10k followers!)

Now down to the nitty gritty: yes, TV antennas are legal in most countries, including the United States. In fact, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the U.S. specifically protects the right of consumers to install TV antennas and use them to receive over-the-air broadcast television signals.

The FCC’s Over-the-Air Reception Devices (OTARD) rule prohibits restrictions that interfere with a person’s right to install, maintain, or use an antenna to receive video programming from direct broadcast satellites, broadband radio services, and television broadcast stations. This rule applies to homeowners, tenants, and condo owners, and it generally prevents restrictions that impair the installation, maintenance, or use of antennas installed on property a person owns or leases and has an exclusive right to use.

There are some limitations to this rule, such as restrictions on antennas that would interfere with safety or historic preservation, but in general, the use of TV antennas is legal and protected by law. BOOM!

So now the next question we hear ALL the time, “why would I need to use a TV antenna?” We can think of MANY reasons why, but here are a few.

  1. Cost savings: One of the main reasons people use TV antennas is to save money on their TV service. OTA TV signals are free, so by using an antenna, you can watch your favorite shows and channels without having to pay for cable or satellite. Still want to watch movies or TV shows on your favorite streaming service? A TV antenna is the perfect complement to your streaming set up. Between an antenna and a few choice streaming services you have MORE content than you could ever consume AND you’re still spending way less than you would on cable.
  2. Local programming: TV antennas allow you to access local programming you might not be able to find on streaming services, and without having to wait until the next day. This can include local news, weather, sports, and hit new shows from ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, The CW and more.
  3. Better signal quality: By using a TV antenna, you can receive a high-quality, uncompressed signal which provides a better viewing experience. You will be amazed by the picture and sound quality with a TV antenna.
  4. Backup in case of emergencies: In the event of an emergency or natural disaster, your cable, satellite or internet services might be disrupted. By having a TV antenna, you can still receive important emergency information from local broadcast stations.
  5. Environmental concerns: Finally, using a TV antenna can be a more environmentally friendly choice than using cable or pay TV. OTA TV signals require less energy to transmit than cable or satellite signals, so by using an antenna, you can help reduce your carbon footprint. It’s an all-around win!

So now that we’ve debunked a few of the antenna misconceptions we hear on a daily basis, what antenna questions do you have? Share with us in the comments and we’d love to answer them in our next blog! And if you need help choosing the best antenna for your location, give our customer service a call at 877-825-5572. You can now watch national and world news 24/7 for free

We’re definitely at a time in history where current events reporting happens at lightning speed, and the news truly has evolved into a 24/7 cycle. But you used to have to subscribe to cable or satellite services to get a 24-hour news channel. Now there is another option: Newsy, the country’s first 24/7 news channel available for free on over-the-air TV.

What Exactly Is Newsy?

Newsy is available to more than 90% of American television homes through its over-the-air service, streaming app and cable connection. The full-time news network, owned by The E.W. Scripps Company, has been on the air since 2008 showcasing opinion-free reporting on the latest news from around the country and the world. Based in Atlanta, Newsy has 14 news bureaus around the country to provide in-depth coverage of breaking news.

The channel launched over the air almost a year ago. It’s currently available on every major over-the-top (OTT) and connected TV platform and provides 17 hours of news per day. It’s the only American news network to be both OTA and OTT.

“We have built a team of strong storytellers, anchors, and reporters with a goal of making journalism as enjoyable, relevant, and interesting as it is important,” said Kate O’Brian, head of the news group for Scripps Networks, in a press release from that launch. “Our promise will be to provide the objective journalism that Americans are seeking.”

The Newsy Difference In 24-Hour News

Newsy provides free access to around-the-clock news coverage and programming. Whether you have an OTA antenna, a smart TV, or a streaming device such as Roku, Apple TV, Sling or Amazon Fire, you can access Newsy 24 hours a day at no cost. Newsy.com has a comprehensive list of where to watch the network, no matter how you tune in.

Newsy is clear in its commitment to focusing on fact-based reporting and avoiding opinion-based reports or programming.

“With persistent curiosity and no agenda, we strive to fuel meaningful conversations by highlighting multiple sides of every story,” the network states on its official website. “Newsy delivers the news and perspective you need without the hype and bias common to many news sources.”

Throughout the day, Newsy offers everything a die-hard news fan wants. A viewer can get a simple rundown on the day’s top stories or sit back and enjoy their current events in a morning show format that blends national stories with local spotlights on people making a difference in the community. Newsy also airs documentaries, investigative reports, and hosted shows that offer deeper dives into the whys of breaking news stories, as well as getting to know the people who are making the news.

Newsy And The Washington Post Team Up

Just in time for the 2022 election season, Newsy and the Washington Post announced a partnership for a new broadcast. “Election 22: What Matters” began airing on Sept. 9 on Newsy to kick off the height of midterm election season.

The 30-minute political show airs weekly at 8:30 p.m. on Fridays for nine weeks, according to an official press release from Scripps. If viewers miss the live show, they can watch re-runs on Saturday and Sunday at 7 a.m. to catch up on the most recent episode. Repeats air through Nov. 6.

“Election 22: What Matters” is co-hosted by Newsy political director Andrew Rafferty and Washington Post news anchor Libby Casey.

Each week, “Election 22: What Matters” intends to look at a different topic related to the upcoming election. One week the show might feature the economy while other weeks might focus on healthcare, education, and other relevant issues.

One element of this show that sets it apart from others on the air is how it relies on coverage from outside of Washington D.C. According to the official press release, reporters working for the show will be based in Georgia, Arizona, and Wisconsin, and other journalists on the Post’s national staff will also contribute. This, in conjunction with reporting from Newsy’s 14 bureaus around the country, should provide a wide-range view of the issues facing the electorate.

“Through a combination of our newsrooms’ resources and our reporters’ on-the-ground interactions with voters, this show will get to the heart of what Americans care about this election,” said Micah Gelman, the show’s video director and a senior editor at the Washington Post. “We feel strongly about highlighting communities and perspectives that are often left out of these important moments and look forward to extending this coverage to Newsy’s vast digital and TV audiences.”

With Newsy, TV watchers are getting a resource that adds value to the OTA offerings available to them, and without the bias that certain news networks are known for. If you want to keep your viewing options open heading into the election this November, Newsy gives viewers another reason to set up an antenna and start enjoying free OTA television.

Cord-cutters throughout the world are using Internet and streaming services to access their favorite content without paying hefty cable bills. However, this combination is fast becoming just as expensive as maintaining a basic cable subscription.

In the United States, the average household has approximately 3.4 streaming service subscriptions. Add to this the rising costs of individual streaming plans and the high costs of high-power Internet in most locations, and streaming to “cut the cord” doesn’t always make sense.

Enter over-the-air (OTA) antennas. These “set-it-and-forget-it” solutions have a single upfront cost. They provide access to a wealth of programming, and once they’re paid for and installed, they’re absolutely free.

With the right OTA antenna connected to a TV (or multiple TVs connected to one antenna), consumers can expect clear delivery of their favorite shows and movies, reliable performance, and no recurring monthly charges. The only challenge when making this change is how to find movies and TV shows to watch.

Choosing Your Antenna, Installing It, and Finding the Available Channels

OTA antennas can be installed to access content from network channels that are locally broadcast. You can watch this content live for free or you can use a DVR to watch it in high-definition (HD) at the time of your choosing.

When shopping for an antenna, you’ll have to choose between indoor and outdoor units. While both antenna types provide access to free content, indoor antennas tend to be easier to set up, while outdoor antennas may be better performing if you are further from broadcasting stations.

There’s certainly a bit more to the decision-making process. Both indoor and outdoor antennas have their own considerable list of pros and cons.

Indoor Antennas: When You Don’t Have Roof Access

Among some of the advantages of indoor antennas are:

  • They’re light and compact
  • They’re cheaper
  • They work well in apartments and other dwellings where direct roof access is limited

The primary drawback of indoor antennas lies in the fact that they’re weaker. An indoor antenna can pick up signals from broadcast stations that are up to 30 miles away and an outdoor antenna can pick up signals from broadcast stations that are up to 80 miles away.

Moreover, the broadcast signals that an indoor antenna picks up have to pass through all of a building’s materials first. This often means traveling through wood, stucco, and brick before reaching the television. The common result is fewer channels and less clarity.

Outdoor Antennas: A Broader Range of Choices

Outdoor over-the-air antennas might cost a bit more and they might take a bit more work to put in, but they’ll invariably give you access to a broader range of programming options. You’ll:

  • Get more channels
  • Experience less static
  • Experience fewer signal glitches

You can also avoid having to look at your antenna while indoors. Although an indoor antenna is significantly smaller than an outdoor one, it can still be a bit of an eyesore.

When choosing your antenna, consider roof access and your installation skills. Once you’ve chosen which antenna type you want, you’ll need to select the right location for it.

Where to Install Your Antenna

There are both directional and multi-directional antennas on the market. Directional antennas must be pointed to the source of the network signal whereas multi-directional options can pick up signals from any angle.

To optimize your signal try:

  • Going high and installing your antenna on your highest vertical surface
  • Determining where the broadcast towers lie in your area and then pointing the antenna in this direction
  • Removing interference between your indoor antenna and the broadcast station

Don’t Forget to Run a Channel Scan

When your antenna is set up and connected to your TV, perform a channel scan. If you don’t find a suitable amount of content on your first try, scan again. Be sure to rescan every time you move your antenna.

Finding Movies and TV Shows Available via Antenna

There are multiple ways to access a complete guide to over-the-air programming. However, most will require the installation or use of a secondary device such as an OTA DVR, a streaming media player, or your tablet, laptop, or mobile phone.

With a Smart TV

If you have a smart TV, you can quickly and easily set up an OTA channel guide by connecting your antenna to the TV’s RF connector. This will allow you to scan through all of your accessible channels using your TV’s remote whenever the antenna is connected.

After you’ve scanned for available channels, you’ll be able to create your own custom guide for future reference.

With a DVR

With a streaming media player and an OTA DVR, you can get an onscreen guide that lists all the available programs in your area that are accessible through your antenna. The DVR will also allow you to pause programming, record, rewind, and more.

With a Gaming Console

If you have a gaming system in your home, consider using this for media management and broadcasting information.

For instance, with Xbox One Live, you can scroll through the available programming whenever your antenna is connected to the console.

Gaming console devices can even tell you which movies and shows will be broadcast in the future so that you can set your DVR to record them.

With Any Web Browser

If you find that connecting your antenna to a secondary device to obtain a programming guide is too costly or prevents you from installing your indoor antenna in the best possible location, you can use your tablet, mobile phone, or web browser instead.

With these, your antenna doesn’t have to be directly connected. You simply need a list of the networks that you have access to through your antenna. You can then look up their programming over the next several days or weeks, print out a schedule of what you want to watch, and keep it with you.

If you intend to use your mobile phone for this purpose, you can alternatively save the data in your phone and set reminders as needed.

Using a DVR to Record

Once an OTA antenna has been plugged into your television, it will be connected to the TV’s tuner that’s capable of reading over-the-air signals. With this setup, every TV in the home will need its own antenna, and consumers will be restricted to watching only free live shows that are broadcast locally.

An OTA DVR or an antenna DVR can be plugged directly into your TV. Once there, the DVR can store what it records on its hard drive so that you can watch OTA content whenever you want and wherever you want.

Each OTA DVR works a bit differently from the others. Some options come with free channel guides and others offer channel guides by subscription only. Once you’ve found an OTA DVR at the right cost and with the right features for your needs, use your owner’s manual to learn how to record with your chosen unit. Keep in mind that although many DVRs offer free services without the need for a subscription, you won’t get much functionality from these. For recording capabilities and access to helpful content guides, you’ll likely need to pay. Knowing what the subscription fees are and what they cover with each device will help you make an informed purchasing decision.

Summary

Over-the-air antennas offer a cheaper alternative to streaming services for both new and seasoned cord-cutters alike. When you know how to choose, install, and use these devices correctly, you can get the greatest possible value from them. Being able to access comprehensive programming guides and track the shows and movies you love will ensure that you never miss out on the content you want to see.

If you’re looking for a small but mighty TV antenna, look no further! TechRadar recently published their review of our Mohu Arc Indoor TV Antenna and we’re thrilled to hear the raving comments!

A few of the pros TechRadar pointed out included the surprising range for a small indoor antenna, the compact design and the unique, unobtrusive look.

“The Mohu Arc is a reasonably compact antenna design with impressive signal-pulling abilities. It’s small enough to be placed on a stand behind a TV, or mounted on a wall directly behind one, and is a good fit for suburban or urban homes.”

The Arc is easy to set up and the gently curved design allows it to blend in nicely to wherever you enjoy watching television. There’s no reason an antenna in your living room shouldn’t be both functional and decorative! It’s easy to install, simply connect the antenna, scan for channels and start enjoying TV that’s already free.

The multidirectional range receives broadcast signals within 40-miles with no aiming necessary. If you’re looking for a powerful indoor antenna that can be used tabletop or hung on the wall, and live in a suburban, urban or fringe-suburban location, this is the antenna for you.

Thank you to Daniel Kumin at TechRadar for taking the time to test out our Mohu Arc Indoor TV Antenna and helping to spread awareness of watching over-the-air, broadcast television LIVE and for FREE with a TV antenna!

Whether they require security updates, WiFi connectivity or voice-enablement, “smart” technology can be overwhelming for many. The Wall Street Journal just posted an article “Stressed by Smart Tech? Consider these ‘Dumb’ Devices”, and honestly, it’s great to see that people are taking a step back from being SO connected with “smart tech” and stripping down to the bare necessities.

For example, TV antennas are an affordable means to accessing free TV, helping households cut monthly costs while increasing the amount of content available (with little upkeep required)! We were thrilled to see that WSJ featured our Mohu Leaf Plus Amplified TV antenna in their list of the top eight pieces of gear that makes the case for a future of less-connected devices.

After all, less is more, right? Free broadcast television has been around for YEARS and so many people still don’t know that they can access network television, like ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, The CW, PBS and more for FREE! All you need is a TV antenna. Watch breaking news, live weather and hit shows like Grey’s Anatomy, American Idol, The Masked Singer, Survivor, the Bachelor and more without any streaming services, subscriptions or internet. Strip away all of the complications and get back to the beautiful basics.

Thanks again to The Wall Street Journal for shining a light on the simplicity of TV antennas and how they can help connect you to the world without any fuss.

Did you know that you should be running a channel scan at least every month? If it’s been a little bit since your last channel scan, you might be surprised with how many more channels you could be getting.

Take a few minutes every month and rescan for new channels because you never know what you might find. An easy way to check to see if there are any new channels is by visiting Mohu’s TV for Free Channel Finder that will let you enter your zip code to see what you should be picking up at your house.

It’s recommended to rescan for channels every month because over-the-air TV stations are growing in number with many new networks launching. And don’t forget, every time you make any changes or updates to your TV antenna, like moving the location, you need to rescan for channels.

If you have any questions or need assistance with troubleshooting your antenna, don’t hesitate to reach out to our Customer Service, available 7 days a week, at 877-825-5572 or chat with them live on our website!

One of the biggest hesitations people have with cutting the cord on their cable TV box is concern about whether they’ll lose access to live sports. With the Super Bowl and Winter Olympics both coming up, that concern is even more in the front of people’s minds.

The fortunate fact, however, is that you can stream live sports online without a cable TV box or subscription, including the Super Bowl and Winter Olympics, by simply combining an over-the-air antenna with a streaming service.

Buy an Antenna

The TV antenna you want to buy is called an over-the-Air, or OTA, antenna, also seen as a high-definition, or HD, antenna. Straightaway, installing this on a television will allow you to watch the major broadcast networks like CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, and PBS.

On its own, it will not, however, allow on-demand or DVR access, nor will it allow you access on a device other than a standard or smart television with an antenna coaxial cable port. You can add a DVR device to your setup if that’s a priority. It also will not allow you access to live sporting events if they’re not broadcast on one of these major networks or subchannels, such as on a premium cable station.

An OTA antenna is therefore an instrumental component of the setup you need to be fully prepared to watch the Super Bowl, Winter Olympics and all other live sporting events without a cable box or subscription. But it’s not enough by itself.

Join a Streaming Service

Streaming services offer access to premium cable stations without the need for a premium cable subscription.

They provide that service for a fraction of the cost of cable TV. They provide it without the need for bulky equipment; it’s just an app download. You can also view it on multiple mobile devices, like an iPad, Roku Express, or Amazon Fire Stick, rather than just a TV connected to the cable box.

You may need to join more than one to get all the live sports, leagues, games, matches and special events you want to watch. That’s because different streaming services purchase different licenses from the various content owners.

The added benefit of a streaming service subscription is that even if you have an OTA antenna that allows you to watch the Super Bowl and Winter Olympics live at home, if you’re away from home during any particular game or event, there’s no problem. You can still stream it on-the-go over your mobile device using your streaming app of choice.

Thanks to the benefits of digital DVR, you can now even start watching a sporting event at home and finish watching while out and about, or vice-versa.

Considerations When Switching to Streaming

Your Internet Connection

When switching from cable TV to a streaming service, you do want to take the quality of your internet connection into account. The main questions you want to ask are whether it’s fast and consistent enough to maintain a quality signal. Will you be able to view live-streamed TV smoothly and consistently without jumpiness, pixelation, or the need for extensive buffering?

If your internet connection is not fast, consistent, or secure enough to support live streaming, you may need to upgrade service or switch to a different internet service provider (ISP.)

Which Streaming Services Carry Which Sports Channels

To subscribe to a streaming app specifically for NFL games and the Super Bowl, you can choose between NFL Gamepass and NFL Sunday Ticket, only there’s a downside to each. The games on NFL Gamepass aren’t broadcast live; they’re prerecorded. NFL Sunday Ticket, meanwhile, broadcasts live games, however, like MLB.tv does with baseball, only out-of-market games. If you live within a team’s home region, you’ll be blocked from live streaming it over the app unless you mask your location using a VPN.

You can watch all NHL games on NHL.tv, all NBA games on NBA.tv, College Sports on College Sports Live and so on. MLB.tv broadcasts only out-of-market games, subjecting all teams to blackouts for viewers living within any team’s home region.

Barring these options, how do you find which streaming services carry which of the premium cable channels broadcasting most of the sporting events you want to watch live? You can find the vast majority of sports channels streaming on Hulu Live and Sling TV, including the Olympic Network where you can watch the Winter Olympics. They also both carry:

  • ACC Network
  • ESPN
  • ESPN Goalline
  • ESPN2
  • ESPN News
  • ESPNU
  • Fox Soccer Plus
  • FS1
  • FS2
  • Golf Channel
  • NBCSN
  • SEC Network

Each of these streaming apps also carries certain sports channels the other doesn’t. For example, other live sports Hulu Live carries includes BTN, CBSSN, ESPN College Extra, ESPN Desportes and MLB Bases Loaded.

To see what sports channels other streaming apps carry, check their respective sites for complete live sports listings. Some of the streaming services also known for their live sports offerings include YouTube TV, AT&T Now and fuboTV.
